MINERAL RESOURCES MADANG LIMITED BRINGS RUGBY LEAGUE BACK TO MADANG
After a seven-year absence, the Madang Rugby League has made a return to the field. This revival was made possible through a major sponsorship from Mineral Resources Madang Limited (MRML), a subsidiary of the Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC).
The season culminated with a successful Grand Final at Ron Albert Rugby Field over the weekend. The sponsorship provided the essential funding for the 12-round season, which included competitions for Under 20, Women’s, and Senior Men’s divisions.
MRML Board Chairman Steven Saud said, “this initiative reflects MRML’s commitment to converting wealth from the project into meaningful benefits for the people of Madang.”
“Rugby League is an invaluable instrument for unity. Our communities are stronger and more united through sport, and when Madang athletes achieve great things on the field, our provincial pride soars.”
“Madang Rugby League must be a force for restoration and prosperity.” Chairman Saud remarked.
MRDC’s Chief Risk officer Richard Aupae emphasised the strategic importance of the sponsorship.
“Madang Rugby League will foster healthy, active living and community unity.
In addition to rugby, MRML has also provided a K50,000 grant to the Madang Town Basketball Association this year, as a broad commitment to local sports.
Athletes were encouraged to be role models, using their discipline and teamwork to set a powerful example for the community.
The revived 2025 season culminated this weekend with a thrilling Grand Final, showcasing the best talent across three divisions. In the senior men’s division, Easi Logistics Royals clinched the title in a hard-fought battle, emerging victorious over the Pearl Logistics Hawks with a tight 20-16 win.
The passion for the game was just as strong in the other divisions. The young guns from North Riders of Riwo village took home the Under 20 shield, while the women’s division saw the Royals secure their victory by forfeit.
